24 MARCH NATIONAL CHEESESTEAK DAY AUCTION
Lot 64:
Description
A set of four ceramic kitchen canisters designed in the form of traditional milk cans. Each canister features a slightly tapered cylindrical body with two integral lug handles at the shoulder and a domed lid with a central loop handle. The ceramic body is finished in a cream-colored glaze with a fine blue and reddish-brown speckled sponged effect throughout. Each canister is decorated with a different pastoral Americana landscape scene representing the four seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. The decoration is applied via polychrome transfer-printing. The Spring scene depicts a farm with a red barn and sheep; Summer shows a rural water mill; Autumn features a harvest scene in an orchard; and Winter illustrates a snowy village with a horse-drawn sleigh. The scenes are signed in script by the artist S. J. Towle, and the names of the seasons are scripted on the lower portion of the transfer designs.
Height: 10 inches
