Description
This pair of US Jefferson five-cent pieces consists of one specimen dated 1944 and one dated 1945. These coins are struck in the wartime alloy of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese. The 1944 coin features a large P mint mark above the dome of Monticello on the reverse, indicating production at the Philadelphia Mint. The 1945 coin features a large S mint mark in the same position, indicating production at the San Francisco Mint. Both coins feature the Jefferson obverse and Monticello reverse. The coins are housed in cardboard and plastic 2×2 flips hand-labeled with the dates, mint marks, metal composition, and inventory numbers #777 US5105 and #777 US5103. These silver-alloy nickels were produced from 1942 to 1945 to conserve nickel for the war effort.
