JULY BOOM
Lot 156:
Description
This Southern stoneware jug is characteristic of the pottery traditions of Crawford County, Georgia. The vessel features an ovoid or beehive form with a short, collared neck and a single hand-pulled strap handle that terminates in a thumbprint at the base. It is finished in a dark brown alkaline glaze featuring dense white inclusions, a result of lime or feldspar particles in the glaze often referred to as a snowflake effect. The underside of the base shows concentric wire-cut marks from removal from the potter’s wheel and features a central incised mark consisting of two curved, overlapping lines forming an eye-like shape.
Height: 9 inches.
