JULY BOOM
Lot 157:
Description
This 19th-century American stoneware jug features an ovoid-to-cylindrical body with a rounded shoulder, a short neck, and a hand-applied strap handle. The exterior is finished in a heavy salt glaze, which has produced a characteristic orange peel texture and a mottled, variegated color palette of dark brown and ochre. The vessel displays prominent vertical glaze drips and deposits of kiln ash, which are indicative of traditional wood-firing techniques. A small area of blue-toned staining, likely cobalt residue, is visible on the lower portion of the body. The form and glaze characteristics resemble the work of Southern regional potteries from the late 19th century. No maker stamps, incised signatures, or capacity markings were identified on the vessel.
