Description

A pair of United States Shield Nickels, dating from the 1865-1866 period. Each circular, silver-colored metal coin features a shield design on the obverse and the denomination “5 CENTS” within a field of stars, encircled by “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” on the reverse. The first coin is clearly dated “1866” on the obverse, where it also features the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” above the shield. The second coin is significantly more worn, with much of its detail, including the date on the obverse, largely illegible, though the general shield and reverse “5 CENTS” design are still discernible.
