Description

antique stoneware items consisting of a large storage crock and its corresponding fermentation weight/lid. The crock features a tall, ovoid body with a wide rolled collar rim and two small applied lug handles on the shoulders. It is coated in a thick, glossy dark reddish-brown glaze, characteristic of Albany slip style. A recessed capacity mark of “3” is visible near the rim, indicating a three-gallon capacity. The companion piece is a circular, heavy ceramic weight, commonly used as a fermentation weight or butter churn lid insert. The weight is partially glazed brown on the convex side and unglazed on the reverse, featuring a central drainage or finger hole and a raised lip designed to fit within the crock’s opening. An adhesive blue inventory sticker bearing the numeral is present on the front of the crock.
