Description
A single carved wooden mask attributed to the Baule people of the Ivory Coast, West Africa. The mask features an elongated face rendered in a stylized aesthetic, painted primarily in mottled yellow and brown tones. The eyes are stylized slits accented in white, and the cheeks are decorated with geometric triangular elements painted in teal and brown. The mask is surmounted by an elaborate superstructure that includes large, curved horn-like projections flanking the head and a tall, multi-part element rising vertically, decorated in contrasting vibrant reds and patinated blue-green finishes. The bottom edge of the mask features two large circular openings, suggesting a highly stylized jawline or handle design. The interior cavity is dark-stained.
