Lot 54:
Description
A pair of grinding implements identified in the market as Prehistoric Paleo-American metate and mano. The lot consists of two distinct natural stone artifacts: a large, irregularly shaped gray grinding slab (metate) and a smaller, oval, smooth tan hand stone (mano). The metate is composed of a rough, pitted gray stone, potentially sandstone or quartzite, exhibiting significant dark staining and patination across its working surface consistent with long-term use. The mano is composed of a different, smoother tan stone and bears a small neon green sticker marked “206” in black ink. A handwritten note visible in the background provides context, reading “NATIVE Americn Grinding stones 206,” suggesting a Native American origin for the artifacts. Both stones show substantial wear consistent with their function as grinding implements.
