24 MARCH NATIONAL CHEESESTEAK DAY AUCTION
Lot 108:
Description
This two-piece ceramic set depicts a traditional Spanish bullfighting scene. The set consists of a matador in a dynamic, low-profile pose holding a sword and a billowing cape, and a charging bull with stylized, defined musculature. Both pieces are hollow-cast ceramic featuring a two-tone decorative glaze. The primary bodies are finished in a dark reddish-brown glaze designed to simulate a wood-grain texture. Contrasting elements, including the matador’s montera hat, shoulder epaulets, cuffs, and cape, along with the bull’s horns, are finished in a thick, cream-colored crackle glaze. While no maker’s marks are visible on the undersides, the design and glaze technique are consistent with mid-century modern decorative ceramics produced by Treasure Craft.
Length: approximately 12 inches (matador).
