Description
This commemorative plate, titled The Navy Today, was produced by the U.S. Historical Society in cooperation with the U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C. The item features a central circular translucent insert designed in a stained-glass style with artwork by Jack Woodson. The illustration depicts a United States Navy sailor in a traditional blue peacoat and white dixie cup cover standing before a waving American flag. The background shows a progression of naval vessels including a battleship, an aircraft carrier, and a support ship, with modern jet aircraft flying above. The scene is set over a stylized map of the world. The central insert is mounted within a wide, polished metal rim composed of a pewter-style alloy. The lower front of the metal rim is stamped with the following text: No. 2434, The Navy Today ©, U.S. Navy Memorial, Washington D.C., and U.S. Historical Society ®. The artwork within the insert contains the printed signature JACK WOODSON in the lower-left quadrant.
