Description
This two-piece matching wash set is composed of a pitcher and a basin made of semi-vitreous earthenware. Produced by the Edwin M. Knowles China Company, the set features a cream-colored ground decorated with floral transfer prints in shades of purple, white, and green. The pitcher has a bulbous body, an ornate scrolled handle, and a scalloped, flared rim that retains traces of original gilding. The neck of the pitcher is accented with embossed foliate scrollwork. The basin is a deep, wide bowl with a flared rim and an embossed gadrooned or rope-turned pattern around the lower exterior. The underside of the pitcher features a green underglaze factory mark depicting a globe surrounded by the Latin motto BONA FAMA EST MELIOR ZONA AUREA with the trade name ALBA CHINA printed below.
