Description
This vintage industrial variable autotransformer is manufactured by the General Radio Company, USA. Known by the trademarked name Variac, this model W5MT3 is housed in a heavy-duty metal enclosure with a characteristic gray crinkle-finish and is equipped with a sturdy metal carrying handle. The front panel features a large black rotary control knob used to adjust output voltage across a graduated scale from 0 to 140. The faceplate is printed with the following text: VARIAC, W5MT3 AUTOTRANSFORMER, GENERAL RADIO USA, OUTPUT VOLTAGE (WITH 120V INPUT). Technical specifications listed at the bottom indicate: ONE SIDE COMMON TO LINE & LOAD, LINE 120V 50-60Hz, LOAD 0-140V 5A. The controls include a metal toggle power switch for ON/OFF functions and a red pushbutton labeled RESET. Identification markings 63E and 77C are stenciled on the front panel and the side of the housing. Connectivity includes an integrated heavy-duty power cord with a three-prong Hubbell plug and a top-mounted Hubbell AC outlet. The side of the unit features UL and CSA certification labels.
