Lot 85:
Description
This US silver three cent piece, commonly known as a trime, is dated 1852 and was struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The coin is composed of 75% silver and 25% copper with a plain edge. The obverse features a central six-pointed star with an inset shield, surrounded by the impressed legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the date 1852 at the base (photo 1). The reverse displays a large Roman numeral III within an ornate C-shaped outline, encircled by thirteen small stars (photo 2). This denomination was introduced to facilitate the purchase of three-cent postage stamps during a period of silver coin hoarding.
