JULY BOOM
Lot 30:
Description
This lot consists of two vintage wall-mounted cast iron match holders, each featuring decorative relief work and functional match compartments.
The first match holder is cast in the form of a conquistador helmet or draped turban mounted on an oval backplate. The backplate is decorated with intricate low-relief foliate and scroll designs. The reverse of the casting features raised relief marks reading D over 17, LB 22, and IRON ART. It includes two mounting holes, one at the top and one at the bottom.
The second match holder features an openwork, pierced Victorian-style design. The backplate displays stylized heart and scroll motifs, topped with a scrolled cresting. The rectangular pocket at the bottom holds matches, and the textured, ribbed sides of the pocket are designed as match-striking surfaces. The upper reverse of the crest is cast with the initials J.M.T. CO.
Both pieces exhibit a black-painted finish with areas of wear and minor oxidation revealing the underlying cast iron.
First match holder: 6.5 inches high
Second match holder: 7.25 inches high.
