Lot 167:
Description
A mid-20th century carved cedar trinket or jewelry box. The exterior of the box features relief-carved floral and foliate designs across the lid and the front panel. The center of the lid is inset with an oval medallion depicting a rural landscape with cottages and trees, appearing to be a printed transfer or decoupage under a clear protective topcoat. The interior reveals the natural graining of cedar wood, with a distinct transition between the reddish-brown heartwood and the pale sapwood. The box is elevated on four carved block feet and is secured by a brass-toned metal latch and two rear hinges. The underside of the box contains two handwritten gift inscriptions: one in bold black ink reading From Merry Dec. 1958, and a fainter pencil inscription above it reading From Miss Bridge Dec 25, 1958.
